Kazakhstan's Buckwheat Imports Jump 18-Fold as Russian Surpluses Flood Market
Kazakhstan's buckwheat market is experiencing a sharp structural shift as imports from Russia reach unprecedented levels, potentially undermining domestic production and altering long-term agricultural priorities. According to data from Agroexport, cited by APK Novosti, Kazakhstan imported 11,800 tons of buckwheat between January and July 2026, totaling $2.3 million. The scale of this increase is stark when compared to the same period last year: physical volumes have surged 18-fold, while the monetary value of imports has climbed 26-fold. The speed of this growth is particularly telling. The previous annual record was set in 2022 at 9,600 tons. In 2026, Kazakhstan has already surpassed that full-year peak in just seven months, signaling a significant departure from historical import patterns.
