World Tourism Day 2026: Why it is celebrated and this year's theme

World Tourism Day marks the adoption of the statutes of the UNWTO on September 27, 1970. First officially celebrated in 1980, the date was chosen because it represents a key milestone in international tourism governance and coincides with the end of the high tourism season in the northern hemisphere and the beginning of the season in the southern hemisphere.
