Cyclamen winter care: Protect tubers from saturated soil and frost

A cyclamen's survival in cold weather depends less on the thermometer and more on the moisture levels in its substrate. While the plant can tolerate brief dips to -2…-5°C-provided it has been hardened and the soil is not saturated-the combination of frost and excess water is usually fatal. Cold Response and Critical Limits Outdoor varieties possess a higher natural resistance than large-flowered indoor hybrids, as their cellular sap acts as a biological antifreeze. When stems droop toward the ground during a cold snap, the plant is deploying a defense mechanism to reduce evaporation and minimize frost risk. If temperatures rise above zero, tissues typically regain turgor and stems lift again. The danger zone begins below -5°C or when the root ball freezes entirely, leading to irreversible tissue damage. The most critical error is watering a drooping plant immediately before a frost; freezing water expands, physically rupturing the root system and the tuber.
