Israel Election: Netanyahu Rival Eisenkot Can at Least Promise Less War

On Oct. 27 Israel goes to the polls in one of the most fiercely contested elections since the state’s inception in 1948. At stake is the possible displacement of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by an apparently more moderate leader, Gadi Eisenkot. Eisenkot, a former chief of Israel’s army who has been in politics for only four years, heads a new party named Yashar — Hebrew for honest or upright. This contrasts with Netanyahu, who is still fighting protracted corruption proceedings.
