Makeup Artist Secret: How to Prep Your Skin So Even Budget Foundation Looks Luxurious

Many women blame their foundation for a poor finish, unaware that the real issue is often skipping a critical step: deep hydration. Applying pigment to dry, unprepared skin typically results in a “mask” effect, clinging to dry patches and sliding or pilling within a few hours. Applying decorative coverage to bare, dry skin is a strategic error. Foundation consists of pigments blended with an oil-water base; without a prepared surface, the product cannot distribute evenly. Instead, it settles into the skin's texture, making pores and fine lines more prominent, which often makes the complexion look tired and the makeup appear unkempt. “The goal of foundation is to even out the skin tone and create a beautiful finish. It cannot compensate for dryness or uneven texture; on the contrary, it highlights exactly what a person is trying to hide,” explains makeup artist Marina Kuzmina.
