Wine Corks Against Mice: The Pet Risk Nobody Talks About

When rodents invade a home, the impulse is to act fast. However, relying on "folk wisdom" often yields nothing but wasted time and unexpected risks—specifically for pets. A popular example is the use of wine corks as bait, based on the theory that the material will swell in the rodent's stomach and cause a fatal blockage. The logic is simple: crush natural cork, mix it with lard, vegetable oil, or seeds, and let the mouse do the rest. But there is no scientific evidence that cork disrupts a rodent's digestive tract quickly or reliably enough to be a viable control method. "Using household waste or food items as poison usually results in the pests simply ignoring the bait," says Ilya Kondratyev, a residential maintenance specialist. "More importantly, using materials not intended for pest control risks the lives of pets, who may accidentally ingest these mixtures."
