Autumn chill signals rodent threat: Unveiling tar soap's potent winter defense

When the first frosts arrive, rodents seek warmth and food in vacant seasonal homes. To avoid using toxic chemicals in spaces frequented by children or pets, homeowners can create an olfactory barrier using tar soap. The sharp scent of birch tar disorients pests, making the environment unsuitable for wintering. Using Tar Soap as a Repellent Rodents associate the phenolic smell of birch tar with danger, such as fire. To implement this protection, cut two bars of tar soap into small cubes. Place these cubes on cardboard bases or plastic lids to localize the scent in high-traffic areas and discourage the pests from nesting. Keep these cubes away from bare soil or concrete basement floors, as the soap can soften in high humidity. If pests still penetrate the building by spring, replace the soap and make deep notches in the new cubes with a knife to intensify the aroma.
