Separating wallpaper seams often appear a few weeks after renovation. While homeowners may blame the material, the issue usually stems from how the wall surface absorbs moisture. Without proper base preparation and edge fixation, even expensive non-woven (flizeline) wallpaper will eventually pull away, exposing the plaster beneath. Wall Preparation and Priming An unprepared wall acts like a sponge, absorbing moisture from the adhesive faster than it can bond with the material. This leaves the center of the panel secure while the edges dry into a brittle crust that peels away with the slightest draft. Priming creates a necessary barrier to keep the adhesive on the surface. According to construction engineer Aleksey Tikhonov, the base must be uniformly absorbent. Dust on the wall reduces adhesion by half, making seams likely to split under tension as they dry.
