Comfort is a dangerous illusion: Narrow shoe boxes ruin foot health

Foot anatomy, specifically the length and arrangement of the toes, directly influences the risk of developing calluses and hyperkeratosis (thickening of the skin). Selecting footwear based on the shape of the toe box rather than brand or size alone helps prevent chronic skin irritation and pressure-induced damage. Foot Types and Footwear Selection Toe configurations are generally classified into three visual types, each requiring a specific shoe shape to ensure comfort and tissue health: Egyptian foot: The toes gradually decrease in length from the big toe to the pinky. This anatomy is most compatible with rounded-toe shoes. Greek foot: The second toe is longer than the first. For this type, the length of the insole is critical; the shoe must be sized according to the second toe to avoid compression. Roman foot: The first three toes are approximately the same length. This shape requires a spacious, square, or rectangular toe box to reduce the risk of hyperkeratosis. "Choosing shoes is a balance between aesthetics and tissue health," says Tatyana Gromova in a conversation with Pravda.Ru. "When the toe box squeezes the toes, it results not only in discomfort but also in chronic areas of skin cornification."
