Russian car market may never reach 3 million annual sales again

The Russian automotive market may never return to its previous peak of 3 million vehicles sold annually. According to automotive expert Sergey Tselikov, the long-term ceiling for the market is significantly lower, estimated between 1.5 million and 1.8 million units per year, based on historical demand cycles, income-to-price ratios, and demographic shifts. Historical Peaks and Market Volatility The market first approached the 3 million mark during 2007–2008. Tselikov attributes this growth to the initial saturation of the market, driven by the wider availability of auto loans and the aggressive expansion of foreign brands. However, the August 2008 crisis reduced demand by approximately half. A second recovery occurred between 2012 and 2014. Tselikov notes that this period represented the most favorable purchasing environment in the market's history, characterized by a strong ruble and an average vehicle price of approximately 1 million rubles. At that time, local assembly accounted for 85% of the market.
