Transforming plant residues into loose, nutrient-rich humus can take as little as 8–12 weeks. The primary requirement for this speed is ensuring microorganisms have constant access to oxygen; traditional deep pits often fail because they lack ventilation, leading to anaerobic decay and unpleasant odors. Site Preparation and Structure To prevent the mass from souring, install a composter directly on the soil surface. The structure must feature through-holes or gaps in the walls to allow free air circulation. A two-section system is recommended: one compartment for accumulating fresh garden waste and another for extracting finished substrate.
