Invasive green crabs threaten a vital Indigenous food source

A decade after the tugboat Nathan E. Stewart ran aground and spilled diesel into Heiltsuk clam harvesting areas, Indigenous guardians say the damage is still spreading. In Gale Creek, near Bella Bella, European green crab populations have surged since the spill and are now threatening the young clams the First Nation relies on for food, culture and livelihoods.
