The secret to dense carpet of creeping phlox in your garden

Creeping phlox (Phlox subulata) is a groundcover perennial that creates a dense, evergreen "carpet" 4–8 inches (10–20 cm) high. While valued for transforming empty garden spaces into vibrant spring displays, this plant is highly sensitive to soil moisture and requires periodic rejuvenation to prevent decline. Site Selection and Planting Conditions To achieve the most abundant flowering, creeping phlox must be placed in the sunniest areas of the garden. In shaded conditions, shoots stretch, and the number of buds significantly decreases. This makes it an ideal choice for the foreground of flower beds, alpine gardens, dry slopes, and retaining walls, where it can spill over stones like a floral waterfall. Igor Lytkin, soil scientist: "For creeping phlox, drainage is critical. On heavy, clayey, or damp soils, the roots quickly begin to rot, and the plant may collapse after winter. Choose poor or moderately fertile sites—excess nutrition will promote foliage growth rather than flowers."
