Scientists create the first hypoallergenic dogs using CRISPR technology

Researchers have developed the first genetically modified dogs designed to be hypoallergenic, potentially opening the possibility of pet ownership for people with severe allergies. By targeting the biological root of allergic reactions rather than focusing on shedding, the project aims to eliminate the proteins that trigger symptoms in humans. The CRISPR Approach to Hypoallergenic Dogs Scientists at Kindred Companion Sciences used CRISPR technology to "switch off" the genes responsible for producing specific allergen proteins. The study focused on Beagles, a breed chosen for their friendly temperament. The process involved editing genetic code in cells to remove the primary component that causes negative reactions in humans; this material was then transferred into the eggs of a surrogate mother. In September 2024, two healthy female Beagles, named Alfie and Bailey, were born. Initial analyses of their saliva and fur confirmed that these dogs do not produce the allergen protein.
