Russian Government Extends Sale Of Euro-2 Gasoline Until July 1, 2027

The Russian government has extended permission for the production and sale of Euro-2 grade gasoline until July 1, 2027, maintaining a transitional regime that has persisted since the mandatory Euro-5 standard took effect nationwide in 2021. The extension, adopted by the Government of the Russian Federation, applies to specific regions and industrial consumers where the logistics of supplying Euro-5 fuel are deemed economically unjustified or technically difficult. For the mass retail network, major filling stations have long since switched to Euro-5; the older standard appears only rarely, mainly at small independent outlets in remote areas. Technical gap and vehicle impact The principal difference between the two grades is sulfur content: Euro-2 permits up to 50 milligrams per kilogram, while Euro-5 caps sulfur at 10 mg/kg. Aromatic hydrocarbons are allowed at up to 42 percent in Euro-2 versus 35 percent in Euro-5. Elevated sulfur accelerates corrosion of exhaust-system components and poisons the catalytic converter, leading to increased exhaust toxicity and premature failure of the emission-control system.
