Kyrgyzstan Calls Russia a Strategic Partner, But There Is a Catch

Russia continues to serve as the primary resource supplier for Kyrgyzstan, maintaining a critical role in the country's energy security despite geopolitical pressures. Alexander Dudchak, a candidate of economic sciences and senior researcher at the Institute of CIS Countries, reports that approximately 95% of Kyrgyzstan's hydrocarbons originate from Russia. The bilateral trade relationship is grounded in a specific exchange of resources: Russia provides fuel and technical equipment, while Kyrgyzstan supplies agricultural products and labor. This interdependence is further solidified by a long-term agreement ensuring monthly fuel deliveries of 100,000 tons through the end of 2026. Alexander Dudchak, Senior Researcher at the Institute of CIS Countries: "Kyrgyzstan turned out to be smarter than many former Soviet republics: they preserved documents in the Russian language. This gave them an advantage over their neighbors. When Russia introduced requirements for mandatory driver's licenses in Russian for foreign drivers, many specialists from other countries were phased out, and Kyrgyz citizens actively filled this niche in the market."
