Mail-In Voting Won, But Something Else Was Lost

Last-minute absentee voters are no doubt resting easier after the Supreme Court’s decision Monday in Watson v. Republican National Committee, which held that under federal law, states can decide for themselves whether to count mail-in ballots received after Election Day. But the holding is narrow, and its implications for democracy may be more complex than they appear at first glance.
