The US, Mexico and Canada have been negotiating the future of their transcontinental trade agreement under pressure of today’s deadline and Washington’s threat to withdraw from the pact altogether. If they fail to agree on a straightforward renewal, the likeliest outcome is protracted uncertainty — with the deal limping on for another six years but subject to compulsory annual reviews.
